  • The game arrived in excellent condition and we play it all the time. It’s absolutely wonderful.

  • The title says it all—if you’re considering buying this game, just do it. It really is one of the best board games ever invented.

  • For board in USA /Mayfield edition: i use tacky / non slip shelf liner to lay out the tiles on… and baggies for pieces.

And a mark on the back to keep the expansion pieces seperate… but in the same box.

(the german version has am interlocking border)

for 4 people I go ahead and use the expanded board for elbow room and roads. less frustrating.

I like that it is not all luck of the dice and not all strategy. Small children (& my mom) can win with some good luck. Unlike Monopoly & Risk, no one can start beating another down too much. At least with 3+ players – barter a bit and voila – someone can lose 2 pt with the army or road card – and it’s a whole new ball game! Next game just move the # discs or swap a few tiles – it’s different again!

  • There are many better descriptions of Settlers of Catan that you can find online. In fact, you can even play online for free cms.playcatan.com if you’re interested. Nothing beats playing it in person, however, as you get much better interaction all around.

What makes this and other ‘German’ style family games so entertaining and enjoyable is that the goals and atmosphere of the games differ from common ‘American’ style games. Sure, the point of the game is still to ‘win,’ but the interaction of the players is less competitive than it is cooperative. Also, this game (once you’ve learned and played it a few times) does not take long from beginning to end; usually an hour or so.

To give you a better idea of the comparison between German and American style games, look at Monopoly. Monopoly is the quintessential American family game (and I love Monopoly, don’t get me wrong). Players take turns and are all collecting toward their final goal of victory, but nearly all of that progress (especially towards the end of the game) comes from the wealth of other players. There is no way to get extra money out of the bank in Monopoly, so to win players must get it out of one another. The game can last up to 3 or 4 hours, and for the last portion of the game, only one person is truly involved and excited – looking to clinch the victory by taking the last dollar from their last opponent. Rematches are uncommon in Monopoly, because outside of who gets which spot, the game is largely the same every time. The strategy to win is generally the same thing every time – get properties for building houses and hotels to put your opponents out of business before they do it to you.

Just the opposite is true of Settlers of Catan. Everyone is involved right until the end. Progress is made from the creation/harvesting of commodities, and only sparingly in taking resources from others. Even in placing the ‘robber’, the penalty is more the non-productive territory than it is the stolen commodity. The game typically takes about an hour, and rematches are common, because the board and strategy change every time you play. There are multiple strategies with which a person can try to win the game (too many and lengthy to list here), so people will want to apply something they just learned when they play again so rematches are common.

My wife and I have had great enjoyment playing this game, and only wish there were a two player method (there is in one of the expansion packs which we have yet to acquire – Traders and Barbarians). We’ve purchased the little ‘Fishermen of Catan’ expansion and find that tremendously fun and enjoyable too. Overall, it’s a great, great game and I have yet to hear of someone who has played it and doesn’t enjoy it. You will not be disappointed with this game!
